Perennial flower gardens in the North have amazing tenacity. They withstand freezing winters, hot dry summers, and stand their ground when the rocky landscape tries to take over.
In this scene from my garden, I love the contrast of bright spiky flowers against the subdued hues of the round river stones. I grew up near Algonquin Park and never tire of painting the rocks of the Canadian Shield.
This artwork is the largest watercolour I have done so far in my 37-year career, and the painting process took two months. I used Holbein paints I was awarded in the Women in Watercolor International Juried Competition.
Whether she and her husband are exploring by RV, motorcycle, snowmobile, kayak, or on foot, professional artist Karen Richardson records memories with her camera and uses these images as reference for watercolour paintings. Having grown up in a rural village near Algonquin Park in northern Ontario, Canada, it is no wonder that Karen loves to paint dramatic, rock-filled scenery and intimate studies of nature. Her art captures realistic moments, to encourage viewers to pause and reflect on the astonishing but fragile beauty of our world. Since she began selling her artwork in 1986, more than 700 paintings have been acquired by private and corporate art collectors in 20 countries, and currently her work is represented by four galleries...

This is absolutely stunning work! Those rocks seem other worldly! Just beautiful!
Karen Richardson replied:
Thank you Jimmy. This is the largest watercolour painting I have done so far (40 x 28 inches). Definitely a labour of love. It is a scene from my own garden. Cheers.
