My camping trips to Lake Superior continue to inspire new work. This scene is the remarkable Pebble Beach at Marathon on the north shore of Lake Superior. I visited there shortly after a rain shower - what I call a 'soft' day. I loved the combination of vividly coloured stones and a misty background. I chose a low point of view for the composition to give the stones more prominence, and I chose the title because these stones are as breathtaking as jewels to me.
Whether she and her husband are exploring by RV, motorcycle, snowmobile, kayak, or on foot, professional artist Karen Richardson records memories with her camera and uses these images as reference for watercolour paintings. Having grown up in a rural village near Algonquin Park in northern Ontario, Canada, it is no wonder that Karen loves to paint dramatic, rock-filled scenery and intimate studies of nature.
